One of Wirral’s oldest Chinese restaurants will be celebrating a huge milestone this year.
Capitol Chinese Cuisine, based at Argyle Street in Birkenhead, is one of fond childhood memories. Whether you remember sitting there with your loved ones for a special celebration or it’s your go-to for a Friday night feast, this restaurant holds a special place in many people’s hearts.
The restaurant was first established in 1962, occupying a Grade II listed building overlooking Hamilton Square. As we head into 2022, this marks a special year for the restaurant as they are celebrating 60 years in business.

Their website states they are one of the “most established restaurants in Merseyside”. A staff member told the ECHO that despite it being in the hands of a different family, the same name and same recipe still applies.
The staff member, who has been working there for around seven years, said they are “very happy” to stay in Wirral and continue the legacy, adding it is a “very nice place”. They added they hope to “bring back more business” after the struggles brought on by the pandemic” but have now reopened back to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, also offering a lunchtime menu.
They said: “I means a lot to us. We employ some migrants too to help create jobs when they stay in a new place and hopefully we can help Liverpool and Wirral.”
Taking to Google Reviews, many people were quick to have their say on the “lovely” feel and “good service”. One user said: “The new owner was amazing and we had a fantastic family meal. The menu was extensive and a good deal.
“Our reason for going was it was the first place my partners parents went on their first date 50 years ago and it was amazing to be able to return for them.” Another said: “Lovely food in a nice, quiet atmosphere. Wonderful little evening out for some food.”
A third wrote: “Ordered for collection yesterday as it was my birthday and it was absolutely delicious, probably the best Chinese we’ve had. Everything was top quality and we were absolutely delighted. We only moved to the area late last year and had heard a lot about Capitol but hadn’t tried it yet but we’re already planning the next time.”
Another added: “The Capitol has been consistently the best restaurant in Birkenhead for over 20 years, as a regular, I have fond memories of family celebrations, New Year parties, charity fundraisers and more, you always get a warm welcome, quality food and service. Enjoy.”
